Little Things
Last Tuesday was a bad day for me. I was having personal problems and a mountain of uni work, due dates ever looming, and I just wanted to hide until it all went away. That day it took my mum calling me from work, to get me out of bed (thanks Mum!). I dragged myself to the shower and choked down some toast along with the tears that had been building all morning, then got in the car to drive to uni. An arduous 45min drive at the very least.
Lost in my own thoughts, I was stopped at a set of traffic lights somewhere before the turning onto the M5 motorway in Sydney. I happened to glance to my right and noticed a little girl, very enthusiastically waving at people in cars. I automatically waved back, as not so long ago, I too was a little girl waving at cars from a bus window (where does time go??). And her reaction made my day. I could see that she was so excited that someone had waved back to her… and for the rest of the day I felt good too.
That little girl will never know that she made my day. Most of us remain blithely unaware of the impact we can have on those around us, both strangers and friends. But its the little things that can make a world of difference.
Stanmore Phoenix recently posted on his blog about what message you give to others through your words and actions, and how a small act of kindness, or even something as simple as a smile or a wave can hugely impact someone’s life.
And last Tuesday, I felt that impact on me.
